Conservationists and sportsmen stood up for wetland protections at a packed hearing in the Wisconsin Capitol on December 21st. The Joint Committee on Regulatory Licensing Reform heard testimony on bills AB 547/SB 600 which would remove state protections on “isolated,” non-federal wetlands.
We have long held that we will support efforts to streamline wetland regulations so long as the reforms do not erode protection for valuable wetland resources. We feel that eliminating protections for more than one million acres of wetlands, as these bills propose, would accelerate wetland loss across the state and cause irreparable harm to our state’s waters, wildlife, and downstream communities.
